How to update Google Chrome (and check your version)

Last updated: · By the DeskHowTo editorial team
Quick answer

On a computer, click ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome (or go to chrome://settings/help). Chrome checks for and downloads the update automatically; click Relaunch to finish.

On Android update Chrome from the Play Store, and on iPhone/iPad from the App Store.

Chrome normally updates itself in the background; a coloured Update button at the top right means an update is waiting for a restart. Your open tabs reopen after relaunching.

Update Chrome

Windows, Mac and Linux

  1. Open Chrome and click ⋮ (top right).
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Wait while Chrome checks for and installs updates.
  4. Click Relaunch. Your tabs reopen.

Android

  1. Open the Play Store and search for Chrome.
  2. Tap Update if it's shown.
  3. Optional: tap ⋮ on the Chrome page and turn on Enable auto update.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the App Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Scroll to available updates and tap Update next to Chrome.

Chrome won't update

  • Restart your computer and try again.
  • Check disk space and your internet connection.
  • Work computers may block updates ("Updates are disabled by your administrator") - ask IT.
  • On Windows, antivirus can block the updater; temporarily allow GoogleUpdate.exe.
  • As a last resort, download the latest installer from google.com/chrome and install it over the old version - bookmarks and settings are kept.

Is your OS still supported?

Google periodically drops support for old operating systems. If About Google Chrome says your computer will no longer receive updates, you need a newer OS version to keep getting security fixes.

Why updating matters

Chrome updates include security fixes for vulnerabilities that are actively exploited. Restarting Chrome promptly when the Update button appears is one of the simplest ways to stay safe online.
